About Me

I am The William H. Lawrence Professor and Professor of Finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, and an affiliate of the Institute for Law and Economics and the Wharton Financial Institutions Center at the University of Pennsylvania.

My research spans corporate finance, banking, and investments. More recently, I have turned my attention to the intersection of machine learning and finance, and financial education. I have served on more than half a dozen journal editorial boards, including the Journal of Finance of which I was a co-editor. Recently, I founded and head the Wharton Financial Analytics initiative, which focuses on the application of data science in finance.

In addition to my research, I am passionate about teaching. Over the last 25 years I have taught undergraduates, MBAs, PhDs, and executives at UC Berkeley, Duke University, and Wharton. As the academic director for the Essentials of Finance module in the Wharton Global Youth program, I developed a curriculum for and taught high school students. As a result, I've founded a Financial Proficiency Initiative (FPI), which aims to provide financial education to high school students and their communities.

As for my own education, I graduated from the University of California, San Diego with a B.A. in Economics, and the University of California, Berkeley with an M.S. in Statistics and a Ph.D. in Economics.
